OFFIS-TZI

Know-how for the metropolitan region

The OFFIS-TZI association bundles the complementary scientific know-how of the two largest information and communications technology research institutes in the Bremen-Oldenburg metropolitan region for projects with partners from society and business. OFFIS in Oldenburg and TZI combine the competence of over 400 personnel for the rapid transfer of new technology originating from research. And wherever science and technology meet business, the result is multiple synergy effects and the development of networks. The cooperation with the Centers of Competence association, a cross-industry group of 46 companies located in North-West Germany, is just one example of this. Together OFFIS-TZI is able to refine research results to produce an even wider scope of applicability and more in-depth know-how for business partners as well as to incorporate these results into user-oriented prototypes, systems, products and services.

The importance of maritime trade for North-West Germany makes logistics a central field of interest for research. Our scientists are developing new processes for the intelligent control of logistics systems; to reduce costs and to make the accelerating dynamics of the processes manageable. In addition to this, OFFIS-TZI is carrying out research on future-oriented technologies which can make a contribution to mastering demographic change. This research includes work on allowing people to remain independent and in their familiar surroundings as they become older as well as on developing supportive, labour-saving technology to motivate older employees and keep them at work longer than is currently the case (Ambient Assisted Working – AAW). Additional key areas of interest are green IT, i.e. reducing energy consumption, and the interaction of humans and machines in the fields of health, education and transport.
