Currently existing or discussed approaches of spatial data infrastructures (SDIs) provide solutions to common problems caused by syntactic heterogeneity of distributed data and services. Nevertheless, these approaches do not solve the issue of semantic heterogeneity. In this paper, we present a use case from the area of disaster management, which illustrates the benefits of employing a state-of-the-art SDI. The use case also points out several semantic heterogeneity problems that need to be solved. We analyse these problems and present approaches to their solution, which are currently developed in the research project Semantic Interoperability by means of Geoservices (meanInGs).
