Abstract
Wireless networks are increasingly based on IP (Internet Protocol) technologies and use them for both transport and signalling. Such an extensive use of the Internet Protocol will allow seamless movement of the user between different wireless interfaces, and support of heterogeneous wireless access devices. As wireless IP-based networks become more popular and larger in size and coverage, a simple route discovery mechanism becomes costly in terms of control overhead, and latency of the discovery. Therefore, plenty of investigation is being carried out on wireless and mobile networks, and on how to make them more
efficient and energy saving. In this thesis, optimization of the route discovery in reactive routing protocols is proposed by introducing a paging scheme. A paging mechanism is an essential component in energy efficient wireless networks. Therefore, this work researches and evaluates a paging
scheme that offers a reduced value of the control overhead and the route latency. The objective of this thesis is to offer a competitive IP-based hybrid routing protocol, designed for hierarchical and mesh network topologies that makes the network more flexible to the traffic and mobility. The initial paging concept is based on existing protocols such as Cellular IP and HAWAII. Additionally, the presented scheme introduces optimized mobility management and modifications for reduction of the paging control overhead. Following that,
two protocols have been designed and implemented in the Qualnet Network Simulator, namely AODV (Ad-hoc On-Demand Distance Vector Routing protocol) with paging and MRP (Mobile Routing Protocol) with paging. Furthermore, the protocols are extended to meet the requirements of a mesh topology.
The optimal paging parameters are investigated and analytical evaluation for different network sizes and topologies is shown. Paging area design parameters such as size and placement are optimised. They are mapped to the paging update intervals and adapted to different traffic and mobility. Finally, the simulation results obtained with Qualnet are presented. They are compared to
the analytical solutions in order to prove the validity of the proposed protocol. Different topology configurations and scenarios are investigated. Additional results for overhead, delay and jitter demonstrate the applicability of the proposed solutions.
